JURY of the 6th International Giulio Perotti Singing Competition

in Ueckermünde 4th – 10th 2019

 

  1. The adjudicating panel will be made of international singers and professors of music.
  2. The President of the panel will have the responsibility of ensuring that the panel makes all judgments according to the preset criteria.
  3. In the event of there being an exceptionally high number of participants, the panel reserves the right to shorten the individual competition programmes.
  4. After each round, the results will be given to the candidates in the Regional School (Ueckerstrasse 59, Ueckermünde). The results will also be published on the competition website.
  5. The decision of the adjudicating panel are final, and cannot be contested, either with the panel, or through the court of law.
  6. If any prizes are not awarded, the jury reserves the right to rename the prizes.

 

The list of the Judges

kalischewski2012Prof. Sylwia Burnicka - Kalischewska graduated from the State School of Music of Feliks Nowowiejski in Szczecin in the solo singing class of prof. Andrzej Kwiczała. She graduated from the Faculty of Russian Language and Applied Linguistics at Warsaw University (1996). In 1997 she graduated with distinction from the Academy of Music of Frederic Chopin in Warsaw in the solo singing class of prof. Urszula Trawińska-Moroz. In 2002 she completed her doctoral studies at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics and East Slavonic Philology at Warsaw University and she received the academic degree of Doctor of Humanities. In 2012 she received the academic degree of Doctor of Arts of Music in the Arts "Vokalistik" at the Academy of Music of Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz in Łódź. She participated in master classes conducted by prof. Ryszard Karczykowski, Maestra Maria Fołtyn, prof. Bożena Betley. The first stage experience she gained during numerous tour with the Polish Music Theatre in Warsaw. The most frequently performed roles in a stage andas a concert are: I, II, III Lady of "Magic Flute", Donna Elvira in the opera „Don Giovanni”, Countess Almaviva in „The Marriage of Figaro” by W.A . Mozart, Rosalinda in „Die Fledermaus” by J. Strauss, Maggie and Gertrude in „Hänsel and Gretel” by E. Humperdinck, Leonora in „Il Trovatore”, Amelia in „Masquerade ball” by G. Verdi. She has given concerts with many orchestras f.e. Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Academy of Music in Warsaw, Budapest National Philharmonic Orchestra. She sang under the baton of Henryk Czyż, prof. Ryszard Dudek, Andrzej Knapp, Wojciech Szaliński, Zbigniew Powolny, Bogdan Hoffmann, Eugeniusz Kus, Antal Barnas, Friedmar Bellmann, Włodzimierz Porczyński and other conductors. She has performed as soloist at the Polish stages: the National Theatre in Warsaw, Theatre „Na Woli” in Warsaw, the Grand Theatre in Poznan, Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, as well as on the stages of opera houses in Germany: Bremen, Hannover, Hamburg, Erlangen, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart , Wuppertal, Kiel, Münster, Mannheim, Regensburg, Dortmund, Hamm, Osnabruck, Schwedt, Lübeck, and many other cities. In 1997-2004 she worked as a soloist in the Powszechny Theatre of Zygmunt Hübner in Warsaw. She played a role of Sophie de Palma, a pupil of Maria Callas, in the „Maria Callas- masterclass” of Terrence McNally (with Krystyna Janda and Cezary Zak). At the same time she was also a soloist in the Warsaw Philharmonic with which she toured throughout Poland. The artist was invited to participate in many important festivals. She had guest performances at the XXXVII Festival of Stanislaw Moniuszko in Kudowa Zdrój, V Opera Festival in Bydgoszcz, II Opera Meeting in Grudziądz, VII and VIII Festival of Peace in Jawor and Usedomer Musikfestival. She has performed in Poland, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, and France (Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris), Austria (Konzerthaus, Vienna) and the U.S.A. (Copernicus Center in Chicago). Sylwia Burnicka - Kalischewska made many recordings for radio and television. Since 2002 she has been teaching solo singing at a music school Kreismusikschule Uecker - Randow in Ueckermünde. In 2004-2005 she collaborated as a teacher of solo singing with a music school Musikschulzweckverband „Kon.centus” in Neubrandenburg. Her students have won German local and international vocal competitions. They are also students of vocal faculties at the Music Academies in Berlin, Rostock and London. In 2010, she founded the International Vocal Competition of Giulio Perotti in Ueckermünde, where she remains the artistic director. Since October 2013, Prof. Sylwia Burnicka - Kalischewski has have a solo singing class at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, and since September 2017 she has been an associate professor at this university. In January 2014, she was honored with the highest distinction of Ueckermünde - Honorary Diploma and Cultural Award - statuette of "UECKERICH für den Bereich Kultur 2013" for outstanding artistic achievements for the city and the region. This distinction was solemnly handed during the New Year's Gala by the Mayor of Ueckermünde Resort Gerd Walther. In May 2016, Gerd Walther gave her an award for outstanding cultural activity. Sylwia Burnicka - Kalischewska is the authoress of several monographs and many scientific articles in the field of singing, theory of music and linguistics.

The soprano Carolyn Grace James was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the USA. After completing her studies at Arizona State University, she received a scholarship at the Juilliard School in New York. She studied with Darleen Kliewer-Britten, Ruth Falcon, Dennis Striny i Gemma Visser. While still studying, she took part in master vocal courses with: Leontyne Price, Luciano Pavarotti, Licia Albanese, Elizabeth Söderström, Maureen Forrester, Dalton Baldwin, Gerard Souzay, Peter Sellers and Warren Jones. She won first places in such competitions as: Metropolitan Opera Competition, Liederkranz Competition, Abt. Kunstlieder, New York Oratorio Competition, National Association for Teachers of Singing, Music Teachers National Association Competition, Sun Cities Symphony Butterfield Competition,  Phoenix Little Theater Competition, Mario Lanza Competition in Philadelphia, National Society of Arts and Letters, the Madame Butterfly Competition, Performer of the Year,  Arizona State University School of Music, Young Alumni of the Year award, Arizona State University. She was also a finalist at the Carnegie Hall American Music Competition. Prof. Carolyn Grace James began her career in the opera theatres and philharmonics in the USA. She performed with the following conductors: James Levin, Seiji Ozawa, James Colon, Antonio Pappano, Mark Minkowski, Phillip Herewege, Bruno Weil, Trevor Pinnock, Leopold Hager, Yoel Levy and many others in Metropolitan Opera New York, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra Bastille in Paris, Theatre de la Monnaie Brüssel, Kölner Oper, Miami Grand Oper, Dresden Semperoper, Mannheim Stadt Theater,  Karsruhe Landes Theatre, Philadelphia Opera, Wienervolksoper, Koblenz Oper, Chile Theatro Communale and in Santa Fe Opera. The most important parties were: Aida in Montreal, New Jork (Met), Philadelphia, Berlin, Cologne, Karlsruhe and in other 20 cities in Germany, as well as Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), La Contessa (Le Nozze di Figaro), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Elettra (Idomeneo), Vitellia (La Clemenza di Tito), Amelia (Un ballo in maschera), Elisabetta (Don Carlos), Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes), Alice Ford (Falstaff ), Leonore (Il Trovatore), Abigaille (Nabucco). She participated in pre-premiere of Die Sündflut by Wilfried Marii Danner at the Semperoper in Drezden and in Karlsruhe. They are worth stressing: the world premiere of Vigil of Venus by George Lloyd at the Royal Festival Hall in London (CD recording by Decca), the recording of Elijah of Mendelssohn under the direction of Antonio Pappano (Forlaine’s CD, awarded Grand Prix du Disque) and DVD recording of Don Giovanni under the baton of James Conlon. The artist's repertoire is in the concert-oratory genre, from Bach to Verdi. Professor Carolyn Grace James performed with this repertoire at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, the Winnepeg Symphony Orchestra, the Cardiff Symphony Orchestra and the Wales Symphony Orchestra. In addition, she performed concert tours in Asia and South America. During the guest appearances, she was applauded as part of the Festspiele in Edinburgh, during the Blossom Festival of Cinncinati, in Lyon, Rotterdam, La Maggica Musicale and the Kölner Philharmonie. The artist loves vocal lyric, mainly Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler and Francis Poulenc. Professor Carolyn Grace James also impresses the audience as an interpreter of the works of American composers of the 20th and the 21st century, not forgetting the genre of Spirituals and Gospel. In this repertoire she presented herself during the recitals and she shared her experience during the vocal courses at Kansas State University, University of Nebraska in Omaha, in Kerna, Minneapolis, Minnesota, SMU in Dallas Texas, Milliken Uni in Illinois, Shaker Mountain Performing Arts Festival in New York, in Oper Köln, Berlin, Dresden and Seoul. During her career in New York, she discovered a great pedagogical passion. In 2000 she came to Germany and she gave singing lessons in Cologne. In 2010 Carolyn Grace James was offered a professorship of solo singing at the Musical Theater Academy in Hamburg.

f. meinel 1Friederike Meinel studied first at the Berlin Academy of Art with Ingrid Figur and then with Rudolf Piernay in Mannheim. In 2002 she made her concert exam. She was a listener durig master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Aribert Reimann for many years. Ingrid Bjoner and Helmut Kretschmar were also teachers very important to her. Major influence on the development of the singer had master classes led by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Ingrid Bjoner. Mezzo-soprano won in international competitions such as the Vocal Competition of Paula Lindberg - Salomon whether Yamaha Vocal Competition and among others she sang on the stage of the Bavarian National Theater in Munich, Dresden Semperoper, Opera Theatre in Cologne and during the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. She made her debut in the title role of the opera “Penthesilea – Dream” under the direction of Ulf Schirmer during the Wiener Festwochen. Friederike Meinel has worked in the field of opera with conductors as Jun Märkl, Marc Albrecht, Peter Schneider and Jeffrey Tate. She has performed with the following orchestras: the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian National Orchestra, Orchestra Gürzenich in Cologne, Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed in the Berlin Philharmonic, the Rudolfinum in Prague, Cuvilliés Theatre in Munich, Prinzregententheater Theatre in Munich, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Big Hall of the West German Radio in Cologne, Chamber Opera Rheinsberg Castle and in the Spring of Heidelberg. She participated in many CD recordings. One of her recitals, which was held in Cologne Philharmonic and the West German Radio in Cologne, was a concert of songs by Franz Schubert conducted by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and a performance during the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Since 2008 she has been a patron of the German project “Children help children - music creates the future” for the Children’s Aid Society “Catania” (help for traumatized victims).

Marilyn ReesProf. Marilyn Rees graduated with a BMus (Hons) from University College Cardiff before continuing postgraduate and Opera School studies at the Royal College of Music. While still there, she made her professional debut with Kent Opera at the Aldeburgh Festival. Roles have included Susanna, Queen of the Night, Zerbinetta and the Bel Canto repertoire. She has worked extensively in recital and oratorio and has toured Japan, USA, Germany and Italy and has broadcast for television and radio. She sang with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the Bayreuther Festspiele for ten years. Her special interest in vocal pedagogy led her to establish herself as a full time singing teacher in 1996 when she also joined the vocal department at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Marilyn is now a highly acclaimed and sought-after teacher and has a thriving private teaching studio in London of young and established artists. Her many successful students are enjoying competition success and are performing with the major opera companies. She is a frequent adjudicator, examiner and vocal consultant and gives regular workshops in London. Marilyn is also Professor of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, teaches at Cardiff University and is Head of Singing at Junior Guildhall.

Her interpretations as a recitalist have been critically acclaimed in New York, San Francisco, Washington D. C. and Detroit and as well as Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and in Iceland. Ms. Williams' professional carreer began with the San Francisco Opera Center as a member of the Merola Program. She was awarded an Adler Fellowship and subsequently appeared with the company as guest artist singing leading roles in the operas of Mozart, Puccini, Händel and Rossini. She was a member of the Berlin Staatsoper ensemble, making a critically acclaimed debut as Cleopatra in Carl Heinrich Graun's Cleopatra e Cesare. Janet Williams was recently named Guest Professor of the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin and is currently on the voice faculties of the Hochschule für Musik and Theater in Rostock and the Lotte Lehmann Summer Academy in Perleberg, Germany. She has presented master classes, seminars and workshops across the United States, as well as in London, Paris, Reykjavik and Berlin. Her book Nail Your Next Audition, The Ultimate 30-Day Guide for Singers has attracted a global following of young singers and voice professionals.

 

DiegoCrovettiMaestroDiego Crovetti, pianist and conductor, was born in Milano, Italy. After having studied piano in M?nchen (Germany) and Milano, havig graduated at Conservatorio Verdi he mastered in the field of opera and orchestral conducting. He studied also musicology and literature at Milano State University. As a pianist he accompanied many vocal concerts and opera shows all around Italy and Europe (Germany, Austria, France, Swiss, Spain) and Asia (China, Korea, Japan), playing with such singers as Barbara Frittoli, Katia Ricciarelli, Jose' Cura, Giuseppe Giacomini, Giacomo Aragall, Salvatore Licitra etc. In 1997-2001 he worked as an opera-coach at Graz Opera House (Austria) and he was also an assistant of such conductors as Ulf Schirmer, Gunter Neuhold, Anton Guadagno and Maestro Riccardo Chailly at the Milano Verdi Symphony Orchestra. He was also a guest of other theaters like Tokyo National Theatre, Teatro alla Scala (for "West Side Story"), Teatro Sociale di Como. He teaches an opera interpretation for singers and orchestral and chorus conducting at Accademia Donizetti in Masate (Milano) and he holds many masterclasses in Italy, Austria, Japan, China, Korea. He is invited as a Jury at many important singing competitions such as "Aslico" in Como, "Tagliavini" in Deutschlandsberg (Austria), "Viotti" in Vercelli, "Zandonai" (2010 special edition at Shanghai Expo), "Bellini" in Caltanissetta. He made his debut as a conductor with "Philarmonia Mediterranea Orchestra" at the 1st Calabria Opera Festival in Cosenza (Italy). In 2002-2006 he conducted many vocal concerts tours in Swiss, Germany, Austria, appearing also in important concert-halls such as Frankfurt "Alte Oper", Muenchen "Herkulessaal", Zuerich "Tonhalle". In 2002 he had his opera debut with "AIDA" of Verdi at Heidelberg Arena (Germany). He followed many opera productions in Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium f.e. "Aida", "Nabucco", "La Traviata", "Die Zauberflöte", "Die Czardasfürstin". In 2004 he conducted "Tosca" at Busan Opera House (Korea) with Seoul Philarmonic Orchestra and in 2006 he made his USA debut with "Pagliacci" and "Lucia di Lamermoor" at Grand Opera Theatre in Wichita, Kansas. In the same year he conducted "Tosca" in Como and "Carmen" in Milano. In 2007 after "Macbeth" of Verdi in Spain (Madrid, Zaragoza, Toledo) and "Barbiere di Siviglia" in Latina, he conducted "Aida" at the important Avenches Arena Opera Festival. In 2008-2011 he prepared various productions as "Tosca" and "Aida" at the Cheliabinsk Opera Festival (Russia), "Carmen" and "Traviata" at Busan Opera House, "Cavalleria Rusticana", "Barbiere di Siviglia", "Elisir d'amore", "Rigoletto" in Milano and in Sicily, "Traviata" at Daegu Opera House (live broadcast by MBC TV) and Seoul Arts Center (Korea) where he will be back next year. His next production will be "Il Trovatore" at Rho Auditorium Milano and in december 2011 he will debut with Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana at Teatro Politeama in Palermo. In 2009 he recorded a CD of "Cavalleria Rusticana" of Mascagni with the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra.

 

Ulrich MessthalerUlrich Messthaler- at the beginning he studied piano and philosophy in Munich and after than he studied solo singing in Augsburg, New York and Basel. His teachers are Emmy Lisken, Kurt Widmer, Denis Hall, Thomas LoMonaco and Gérard Souzay. Ulrich Messthaler made his debut in Basel with Ann-Sophie von Otter and Paul Frey in "Ariadne on Naxos" and later he starred in such productions as "Idomeneo" directed by Armin Jordan, "The Merry Wives of Windsor” or "Orontea" by Cesti under the baton of René Jacobs and "Orpheus" with Joshua Rifkin. He also participated in opera productions in Basel, Monte Carlo, Hamburg and Stuttgart with such roles as Caronte in “Orpheus” and Escamillo in “Carmen” by Bizet. His concert activities have led him to such important music centers as Tonhalle Zürich, Musikverein Wien, Berlin Philharmonic, Cologne Philharmonic, Palais Garnier Paris and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The artist is often a guest at festivals in Rastatt, Urach, Ambronay, Piccardie, Lyon, Paris, Beaune, Arles, Fribourg, Innsbruck, in the famous series of concerts of “St. Maurizio” in Milan and the “Printemps des Arts” in Monte Carlo where he collaborated with such musicians as Anthony Rooley, Louis Devos, Jordi Savall, Michael Radulescu and Martin Gester. At the Théatre Champs-Elysées in Paris, he sang under the direction of René Jacobs the Word of Christ from the Passion of St. John by Bach. Radio France transmitted it all over the Europe on Good Friday. Ulrich Messthaler has gained his popularity thanks to recitals that revitalized the old tradition of accompaniment while singing on Hammerflügel. It is worth mentioning successes at "Schubertiades in Limoges" with Christoph Coin and Quattuor Mosaique, at the Festival de Royaumont in Paris and other festivals in Germany, Switzerland, France, Poland and Slovenia. He recorded over 30 CDs and DVDs with the works of Monteverdi and Händel, Buxtehude and Bach's oratorios, Schubert's songs, Ravel's works. Many of them have been awarded with the Diapason d`Or, the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, the Grammophon Award, and the "Best record of the year" of “New York Times”. For more than 30 years, Ulrich Messthaler has not been only a singer but he has been also a valued vocal consultant and singing teacher. Since 1990, he has had the class of solo singing and interpretation of songs at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. His purpose is to open new perspectives for an international circle of students. These perspectives are based on historically well-established interpretative methods. His master courses in France, Germany, England, Slovenia, Poland and Brazil, which are based on competence, historical knowledge and which are combined with the vocal work of the whole body, are always of great interest. Ulrich Messthaler participates regularly in seminars and courses at Fondation Royaumont near Paris and he participates in research projects in collaboration with the Sorbonne University. Ulrich Messthaler teaches in London singers and groups like Voces8. In seminars, publications, international congresses he engages in a topic that affects the singing: exploring the forgotten aspects of singing aesthetics and their artistic performance in the present day. Since 2006 Ulrich Messthaler has been the artistic director of the “Festival des Cordes Sensibles” in southern France.

zalewski wlodzimierzProf. Włodzimierz Zalewski - singer associated with the Grand Theatre - National Opera in Warsaw and the Grand Theatre in Łódź. In 1976 he graduated at the State Higher School of Music in Łódź at the Faculty of Vocal and Acting in the class of prof. Zdzisław Krzywicki. He has won many vocal competitions and he has got many prizes and awards. He has a repertoire of over 50 opera parties that he presented on the Polish and foreign scenes, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Greece and the Netherlands. The most important roles are: Gurnemanz in “Parsifal”, the title role in Richard Wagner's “Dutchman wanderer”, Zacharias in “Nabucco”, the title role in “Attila”, Philip II and the Grand Inquisitor in “Don Carlos”, Walter in “Luisa Miller”, Fiesca in Giuseppe Verdi's “Simon Boccanegra” , Scarpia in “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini, Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in “Der Rosenkavalier” by Richard Strauss, Don Pizarro in “Fidelio” of Ludwig van Beethoven, the title role in “Boris Godunov” by Modest Mussorgsky, Prince Gremin in “Eugene Onegin”, Kochubey in “Mazeppa” of  Peter Iljich Tchaikovsky, Mendoza w “Engagement at the monastery” of Sergei Prokofiev, Creon and the Messenger in Igor Stravinsky's “Oedipus Rex”, the Duke Bluebeard in Bela Bartok’s “The Castle of the Blue-Bearded Duke”, the title role in “Don Giovanni” and Sarastro in “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Van Bett in “Car and carpenter” of Albert Lortzing, Zbigniew and Skołuba in “Straszny dwór” and Stolnik in Stanisław Moniuszko's “Halka”. He participated in the Polish and world premieres of the following works: “Draußen von der Tür”  of Sandor Balassy, “Kohlhaas” of  Karl Kogler (record and film), “Maria Stuart” and “Lord Jim” of Romuald Twardowski, “Ubu Rex” by Krzysztof Penderecki, “Wyrywacz serc” by Elizabeth Sikora. He has made many recordings, television and radio. The artist also performs extensive oratorio repertoire, which includes the following songs: Georg Friedrich Handel (Messiah), Johann Sebastian Bach (Passion by  St. John, Passion by St. Matthew, the Mass in B Minor, Christmas Oratorio, Easter Oratorio), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Requiem), Gioacchino Rossini (Stabat Mater, Small solemn mass), Giuseppe Verdi (Messa da Requiem), Antonín Dvořák (Requiem, Stabat Mater), Ludwig van Beethoven (Missa solemnis, The Ninth Symphony). His repertoire includes songs of the series: “Schwanengesang” of Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann's “Dichterliebe”, “Vier ernste Gesänge” by Johannes Brahms, “Songs and Dances of Death” by Modest Mussorgsky, “Song of the sonnets of Michelangelo” by  Hugo Wolf, and numerous songs of Polish and foreign composers. He collaborated with leading conductors as: Zygmunt Latoszewski, Jerzy Katlewicz , Jerzy Semkow, Henryk Czyż, Antoni Wicherek, Bogusław Madey, Semion Bychkov, Manfred Mayrhofer, Antoni Wit. He has performed in many productions of such directors as: Andrzej Żuławski, Marek Weiss-Grzesiński, Fritz Flieder, Pier Luigi Pizzi,  Pier Luigi Pier'Alli, Gilbert Deflo, Christof Loy. He has been working as a teacher since 1980. He is a professor. His students have won numerous awards at Polish and international competitions and they are singing in the best opera houses all over the world. Among his most prominent pupils there are: Mariusz Kwiecień, Daniel Borowski and Piotr Miciński. The artist is the author of a lot of lectures dedicated to the teaching of singing and he is also vocal competitions juror. He leads masterclasses for young singers (in 2003 - at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm) and is the creator of masterclasses in Rheinsberg (Musikakademie). He has supervised and reviewed numerous doctorates, professorships, habilitations and has supervised honorary doctorates of prominent singers: Teresa Kubiak and Christa Ludwig. In 2002-2005 he was a  head of  the Department of Vocal Music at the Academy in Warsaw and in 2002-2008 he was elected a dean of the Vocal Faculty at Music Academy of G. and K. Bacewicz in Łódź.
